WE EXPAND ACCESS TO SERVICES
We fund programs that serve children from birth through middle school. We are currently funding the 2023-2025 grant cycle with the distribution of over $350,000 to 16 local non-profits who share our mission and need the funding to fill gaps in services and support.
United Way of Benton & Franklin Counties continues to follow the unique three-year grant structure because we believe, and heard clearly from our nonprofit community, that multi-year grant partnerships are a best practice and give our partners the time to fully focus on the planning, delivery, evaluation, and outcomes of critical local programs.
Funding decisions are based on dollars available from United Way’s annual fundraising campaign. Strategic investments are made to programs which align with the impact areas and have demonstrated effective delivery with defined outcomes and measures of success. United Way focuses on services that are not primarily covered by other public or private funding support.

United Way envisions our region as a place where everyone has an equal chance to succeed, regardless of race. We recognize that local children of color generally experience worse life outcomes than those of their white peers. For this reason, United Way will ask about strategies used to reach a diverse set of clients, efforts made to be inclusive and equitable in delivery of services, and ability to serve at least 55% individuals of color (a demographic target that represents the current composition of the school-age population in our bi-county region).
Agencies that don’t consider racial equity or don’t meet demographic targets may still apply; racial equity will be one of many factors incorporated into United Way’s funding rubric available on the e-CImpact web portal.
501(c)(3) agencies can apply for up to three programs for funding between $10,000 and $30,000 per program per year. Funding will run for 2 years, from July 2023 – June 2025.
Applicants must meet the following criteria. United Way encourages nonprofit organizations of all sizes that meet these criteria to apply:
- Provides health or human services to children, birth through middle school, in Benton and/or Franklin County, Washington, USA;
- Is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization in good standing with the IRS;
- Is registered with the Washington State Secretary of State as a charitable organization;
- Complies annually with the USA PATRIOT Act;
- Does not engage in discrimination because of race, color, national or ethnic origin, age, religion or creed, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal or state law in the delivery of services;
- Has an active board of directors that meets with a quorum at least quarterly;
- Prepares financial statements, at least quarterly, which are reviewed and approved by the board of directors;
- Files a Form 990 or 990-EZ with the Internal Revenue Service annually if gross receipts exceed $50,000, or files a Form 990-N Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) if gross receipts are at or below $50,000; and
- Submits to United Way the most recent audited or reviewed financial statement. Agencies with $250,000 or more in annual gross income must submit audited or reviewed financial statements to be eligible for funding. Agencies with less than $250,000 in annual gross income must submit compiled, board-reviewed financial statements to be eligible for funding. United Way will provide independent review of these statements.
